Icons

You haven't even begun
This is my very first attempt with icons. I really don't know how to properly use Gimp or how to make pretty icons, but I tried. Here my first experiments featuring Dawn and Buffy.

1. Image and video hosting by TinyPic  2. Image and video hosting by TinyPic  3. Image and video hosting by TinyPic 4. Image and video hosting by TinyPic 5. Image and video hosting by TinyPic

6. Image and video hosting by TinyPic 7. Image and video hosting by TinyPic 8. Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I blame Joni Mitchell's song and my total incapacity of with Media player and stuff (Otherwise I would have made a fanvideo)

Carah, grazie per l'apprezzamento! Dawn, poverina, è così bistrattata dal fandom. Sono contenta che ti piaccia!

OMG welcome to the wonderful world of icons sweetie! You've never done them before? Ah wait, you will be ruined. Making icons is addictive - like crack cocaine.

I would love to see you have another go at the text in #8. I can't see it well but "The key does not walk in this world" is such a great line.

And I'm a little envious of that particular font, Photobucket doesn't have anything like that.

I don't know if I will make more icons. It was difficult for me and with the vidding I had much more fun (And I did the video in an afternoon, while with the icons took me longer) But I'm glad that you liked the results.

The font is Viner Hand ITC. Why photobucket doesn't have it?

That's interesting that you enjoyed the vidding more! Definitely go with that then, the results are sure to be pleasurable.

I wanted to be a film editor when I was in college for a while - I did some editing of projects on 16 mm film and LOVED the process so much. But then in grad school they switched to an earlier (Cruder) digital tape editor that edited VSH tapes. And I started having seizures from the flickering of the images, which are much coarser on VHS than film stock. Today I might not have that problem with digital editing of images from DVD's because of the finer pixel size, but don't have an editing program , and not really planning on getting one at the moment.

Did you edit this from DVD's btw?

The font is Viner Hand ITC. Why photobucket doesn't have it?

Photobucket currently has a very simple editing suite with a very small number of fonts (and no ability to do layers, collage, etc.) But it allows me to both edit and store images and I've been using it for over ten years. I need to look at Paint or Gimp.

I love italic and cursive fonts but the ones that Photobucket has of that sort are SO ridiculously ornate and full of curlicues that even in very large size they're unreadable. (The one in the icons I'm using here from The Body, "Things Fall Apart" is one of my favorites on that program Covered by Your Grace. It has a slightly hand-written feel to it.)

Having more fonts is reason enough for me to look at other programs because I have fallen in love with adding text to icons.

Yes, for some reasons I enjoyed more the editing process. It isn't simple - especially for a newbie like me, I guess - but I enjoy so much the ability to tell a story and to use images and music in doing so. And I wanted to do a Buffy-tribute for so long.

Yes, I edited the images from the bits in the episodes I had in my computer. (I lost the DVDs >O< I plan to re-buy them when I have the chance)

I love the font in this The Body icon. I agree, it's really cute and it seems hand-written, which makes it more interesting and pleasurably imperfect. You should download Gimp! You will have fun with it.

The films I made were mostly silent films (no dialogue) but I became very good at pairing/selecting music with it, sometimes very obscure instrumental pieces. I think in my heart I'm a vidder because I'm constantly writing lists of songs that i'd love to make into buffyverse videos. Or even do as picspams in some instances.

I think what unites making icons and vidding (film editing) is "the shot". If I remember from my film history days in college, Eisenstein (Battleship Potempkin) considered the shot the alphabet, the building blocks of film. I don't recall his exact theories, but it had an influence on me.

Very curious about your list of song! I'll be waiting for the picspam or the vid or the icons you'll be making because of it.

Interesting. I've never studied films (so far) and I know almost nothing about them, except the random articles or such that I read because I really love cinema.

They're really nicely cropped, especially 6 and the Dawn ones.

I'm glad you like them. It speaks about my ignorance in icons matters the fact that I still don't know what a crop is. XD

Heh, no worries! Cropping is cutting an image down - not making the whole image smaller but taking out part of it. So the cropping on the Dawn ones is the choice to come in very close on her face with her eyes almost out of frame. It's how you frame the icon.
