Today the question is: favorite potential slayer.

I like Vi because she's played by Felicia Day and she seems the slayer-version of Willow and I like Amanda, because we get to see her evolution and the moment she discovers that she's a potential. She's maybe the potential we - fandom - care about the most? Whedon kills her for dramatic realism. He doesn't kill girl number whatever that we saw just two seconds on the screen. Amanda was the only one with a story (Except for Kennedy, but she was also important because of Willow) So I guess I'm making a choice everyone would make.

The thing about S7 is this: I love it. So much. I especially love the first part of S7. I love counselor!Buffy, all the bittersweet Spuffy and the general atmosphere at the beginning of the season, so dark and promising. In S7 there are some of my all time favourites episodes like Conversation with Dead People, Selfless and Showtime. But it's also a flawed season and it feels like everything is wrapped up too fast and without really focusing on the details, especially the second half of the season starting with Potential. The potentials themselves are all blurred: we suddenly get all these characters mostly without a characterization for each and everyone of them and we are supposed to care. I can care about the general future of the Slayer's line, but I can't be emotionally invested for a bunch of characters who show up the last minute.

So sometimes I wish we could have had more time. I feel like Buffy needed another season or another bunch of episodes to truly focus on the Potential storyline, makes us care about them and explain better Buffy's revolution and why is important the final empowering message (Because there are still people out there who think: well, she didn't want to be the slayer and now she's putting other girls in her position?) And the empowering final message is SO important. Buffy doesn't want to be the hero, Buffy wants you to be your own hero which brings me to *feels forever*. Also we had the final apparences of Faith and Angel: both seem put there just to show up at the last minute. What importance did have Angel in Chosen? I wish we could have had more poignant interactions.

S7 is in my heart forever, but I feel like with needed something better and longer, maybe, to address every single trope. Or maybe it's just me, I'm greedy.

Also: the white woman symbolizing the good side of slayerhood. So WTF. The First Slayer was black, the Shadow Men black ... the good powers of matriarchy should also be black.

I couldn't really get invested in the potentials, either.

Yeah, they really fell victims to Joss' Funny Accent = Personality School of though for secondary characters... In hindsigh, looking at Joss' writing, he has this very small number of stock characters that he uses, and I guess he ran out of them when he had to create so many new characters in S7.

Because there are still people out there who think: well, she didn't want to be the slayer and now she's putting other girls in her position?)

I have my issues with Chosen, but I've never understood that argument. If she hadn't given them the slayer powers, they would have all been killed, either by The First or by the ubervampires. Empowering the potentials had to be done to protect the slayer bloodline from the First and to at least give all the potentials (and the rest of the world) a fighting chance if Buffy herself failed.

What angers me the most is that Buffy gets bashed for doing this, while Angel get praised for sending LA to hell in "Not Fade Away"... Argh!

(btw, if you like to read people's episode reactions, lookingforoctober on DW is currently rewatching S7)

Thanks for the links and the suggestions!

I ADORE Not Fade Away but that's so fucked up. I generally believe that people tend to appreciate Angel's complexity more because we are all educated to appreciate the complex male hero, while the heroine has always to be "perfect", "loving" etc. The heroine needs to live for love, while the male hero can be the rebel. It seems to me a form of implicit sexism.

I liked the idea of the potentials at first when it was just a few girls, but yeah they really lost me when more and more kept arriving and suddenly there's this great crowd of interchangeable faces living at Buffy's house.

I think that if they had more time to introduce properly the potentials it would have been worked better.
